Whilst society would now struggle to function without the implementation of the elevator, especially when it comes to those with mobility issues, a hundred years ago the elevator we know of today didn’t exist. In fact, the thought of having one inside your home was preposterous.

Here at Elevators Ltd, we believe that the home elevator is a product of technological development and in this blog we are going to go over the history behind its implementation…

1923

The idea was envisaged by a man named C.C. Crispen, who was the owner of C. C. Crispen Motor Car Company, in order to help a neighbour who was bedridden and unable to use the stairs. He conceived the idea of a mechanical ‘seat’ that would be able to travel up and down the stairs for the passenger. After just days of thinking through the idea, Crispen filed the paperwork for U.S patent procedures. The final product was a wooden chair and footrest which moved on rollers up and down the stairs via an electricity supply and formally named the ‘Inclin-ator’.

1928

Five years later, C.C. Crispen decided to build on his original idea in order to account for homes that had a winding staircase. He named the 1928 invention the Elevette® and it became the very first electric stair elevator that had been designed for homes with unconventional staircases.

21st Century

It was C.C. Crispen’s passion for helping others that allowed him to create a name for himself in the engineering and elevator industry. Over time, we have managed to reduce the size of a conventional elevator in order to install them inside the home, which means that people now have the ability to choose between a stair lift or a fully functional elevator.

It is important to remember that the home elevator we know of today is only possible thanks to decades of development within the elevator industry. After all, they may have been introduced for the first time back in the 1920’s but the safety and design aesthetic of a 2018 home elevator cannot be understated.
