The fear of elevators has no official name and is not considered a recognised ‘phobia’- however it is a relatively common type of fear that many people hold.  As elevators are our speciality here at Elevators Ltd, it only right that we research everything and anything to do with our product. In this blog, we’re going to be focusing on the anxiety that people suffer when faced with a lift ride…

Phobias Related to Lifts

  • Claustrophobia, which is the fear of enclosed and small spaces, is often thought to be related to a fear of elevators. This is because it is easy to recognise that an elevator car is small and confined space and thus, a claustrophobic reaction to stepping inside one is likely.
  • Agoraphobia, which is the fear of being trapped or stuck in a situation which would be impossible to escape if you were to have a panic attack, is not directly related to elevators as many agoraphobes are not afraid of elevators at all. Despite this, a lift is an enclosed space that would be hard to escape in the occurrence of a panic attack which is why some agoraphobes are afraid of elevators.

The Truth

Like everything in the world, it is true that riding an elevator can be risky simply because we cannot control external forces- however the risk is very minimal. In fact, many people tend to have a misconception of how an elevator works and think that it may fail by the simple snapping of a wire. This is not true! In addition to this, elevators now have emergency phones/ call buttons and are designed as safe rooms so they are very reliable.

Safety Tips

While we cannot remove all risk from riding an elevator, there a several tips that the Elevator Escalator Safety Foundation recommends everyone follows, such as keep all belongings and bags clear from the doors and never using an elevator in an emergency situation.
