Riding the elevator alone can be a relaxing 2 minutes of peace for those who are able to find comfort inside the metal boxes however sharing the journey with a stranger can be one of the most awkward experiences to exist. After all, making small talk is not something that the majority of us are very good at! Luckily, we’ve decided to put together a few top tips to help you in the future…

Be Brief

Elevator rides are often very short so it probably isn’t the best time to try and begin a conversation that needs 10 minutes of spare time set aside. Instead, start a brief and generic chat based around regular topics that anyone can discuss with ease. After all, the last thing you want to do is find that you have started a one side conversation that you or the others cannot equally input into.

Question Master

If you aren’t very good at answering questions and continuing a conversation you can always take the role of question master and lead the small talk. This way you are contributing to easing the awkwardness however you aren’t pressured to provide answer after answer. The only thing you need to have is a range of different questions to fill the time with.

The Weather

If you are really struggling amongst the awkwardness then the weather is always a good topic to bring up with a stranger. In fact, you will either meet somebody who has a lot to say about the weather or someone who smiles politely and agrees. Either way, you have made the effort to be friendly.

Here at Elevator Ltd we know that small talk can be one of the most painful things to take part in. After all, neither party really want to start a conversation however remaining in silence for the entire two minute journey can be unbearably awkward.
